So with the blu-ray edition of Jurassic park around the corner and lots of chatter about a fourth movie, I think it's time to explain the power of the original Jurassic Park movie. (and in my opinion the only good movie of the franchise). But to do this, I must take you back to the beginning.
Ok so it's a dark movie theater the commercials are over lights out and there it begins “Doom doom“ the first sounds of the movie, some leaves are shaking and a cargo box is driven to a specially created platform and cage. Who can't remember that scene it was terrific, you see just enough dinosaur to keep watching the screen, but not enough to loose your attention.
So what was the real power of this movie, first the script. It is a somewhat plausible script because it uses real facts and merges it with fiction. Real facts like the frog DNA, the mosquito's in ember and basic dino facts.
Second the characters were well written and each had their part to play, you had the expert (Dr. grant), the tough independent female (Dr. Sattler), the macho (Robert Muldoon), the somewhat looney (Dr. Malcolm), the creator (John Hammond), the enemies (Dino's, insurance agent, and Dennis Nedry which was wonderfully played by Wayne Knight), the people to protect (the children Tim and Lex), the false hope (Ray Arnold).
The third strong point was that it is based on an isolated island (Isla Nublar), the fact that it is isolated makes it more exiting and makes the introduction of all available characters clear at the beginning. (which was awful in the second and third movie).
The other thing which was good about the film was that it brought many of the action scenes at night which really gives the story an extra boost. (otherwise it's like watching a horror movie happening at clear daylight, it isn't scary). Plausible dinosaur strength, which was overrated in the second part where a jeep was flung around like a toy car.
The technology used in the movie was just enough, so no ultra hyper super weapons were used, no dinosaurs with lasers on their head and more of those shenanigans. The ending was spectacular, it still is. The buildup was good and concluded in a well rounded ending.
I'm not even going to discuss the second movie.
The third movie was terrible, the story didn't add up and they introduced too much comedy into it, like the collecting of the T-Rex pee.
Where should I begin, well in the beginning of the original movie, Dr. Grant hates children and wouldn't want to have some of his own, here comes the twist, at the end of the movie Dr. Grant finally gets the fatherly role and embraces it when he's in the helicopter. So the third movie doesn't make any sense because he is no longer with Dr. Sattler and she has children with someone else. The introduction of new dinosaurs was great but the T-Rex is still the main attraction in every museum. So having a dinosaur stronger than the T-Rex could be good for capturing the audience so it's not the same enemy as before, however it was done poorly. And doesn't speak to someones imagination, I've seen many T-Rex skeletons never a Spinosaurus.
And maybe the worst part of the movie is giving the main character, the kid played by Trevor Morgan, a role in the story that makes him a tiny Rambo and independent and well adjusted to his new living environment. And the ending, don't get me started, Peter Buchman, Alexander Payne & Jim Taylor didn't know how to end this movie so they chose the easy way out.
So what would be good for the fourth part?
- Bringing back the T-Rex as the alpha dinosaur.
- Raptors but not too much, in the first movie it was limited to only a small pact.
- Some characters from the original movie, but no cameo's they are horrible. Seeing someone for 30 seconds just doesn't add any value to the movie, and makes people wonder if the movie would have been good if they were written into the script.
- Make some of the action scenes happen at night, make it dark, but not too dark so that you can only see the outlines and silhouettes.
- Don't show too much too soon of the dinosaurs.
- Don't make the people hunt dinosaurs make the dinosaurs hunt the people.
- Use the original dinosaurs, not too much new ones.
- Go back to Isla Nublar.
- The hype is 3D so why not, but it should have an added value so things should be in your face.
- Place the dinosaurs around the story, not the story around the dinosaurs.
If you have any comments, let me know.
